So… We Got Ducks
Let me set the scene: a calm, rational family making sensible life choices.
And then—we got ducks.
Not chickens. Not a goldfish. Ducks. Four of them. Because apparently we looked at our lives and thought, “You know what this is missing? Waterfowl and a steep learning curve.” Because making maple syrup for the first time for Sticky Fingers Farm wasn’t chaotic enough.
What We Thought Duck Ownership Would Be Like
- Cute waddling
- Occasional quacking
- Fresh eggs
- Instagram-worthy moments
What It’s Actually Like
- Everything is wet. Always.
- They have zero respect for personal space or cleanliness
- They somehow turn a teaspoon of water into a swamp
- We Googled “why is my duck doing that” more times than we’d like to admit
We quickly realized… we knew absolutely nothing about ducks. Like, less than nothing. Negative knowledge. If there were a quiz, we’d score a -12.
The “Oh No, They Need a House” Moment
Somewhere between “they need shelter” and “why is there mud everywhere,” we realized our ducks deserved better than our original very professional plan:
“They’ll probably just… hang out?”
Spoiler: they will not just hang out. And also, they grow A LOT faster than our other mammals did 🥴
So naturally, instead of buying something simple, we decided to build a duck house. Quickly. Because why make life easier?
Introducing: The Duck Mansion™
We designed and built a cozy A-frame duck house that is equal parts adorable and “we definitely overthought this.”
Here’s the breakdown for anyone else spiraling into duck ownership:
📏 Footprint
- 8x4 overall base
- Because apparently ducks need real estate now
🪵 Base Structure
- Built with 4x4s and blocking
- Translation: sturdy enough to survive ducks, weather, and our learning curve
🏠 Enclosed Sleeping Area
- 4x6 enclosed section
- Plywood floor on the base frame
- A safe, dry place for them to pretend they’re not about to make a mess again
🌤 Covered Porch (Yes, Porch. For Ducks.)
- Decked with 5/4 deck boards
- Because our ducks now enjoy outdoor lounging better than we do
🔺 Roof
- Classic A-frame design
- 4 rafters per side
- OSB panels
- Finished with cedar

Is it overbuilt? Maybe.
Do we regret it? Absolutely not.
Walls, Colors, and “We Want It to Look Cute Too”
We weren’t about to build an ugly duck house. That felt… on brand but unacceptable.
- Front & back walls: plywood cut to fit
- Paint: Sherwin Williams “Shade Grown” (moody, forest green, very Pinterest-approved)
- Stain: Cabot “Burnt Hickory” on the roof and porch
Because if the ducks are going to destroy everything, at least it’ll look aesthetic while they do it.
What We Learned (The Hard Way)
- Ducks need dry space… but will actively try to ruin it
- Elevation helps (hence the raised base)
- Covered areas = less mud chaos
- You will become emotionally invested in your duck housing design
Also:
You will talk about ducks. Constantly. To everyone. They will stop asking.

Final Thoughts
We started this journey thinking, “How hard can ducks be?”
The answer is:
hilariously harder than expected—but 100% worth it.
They’re messy. They’re chaotic. They’re weirdly charming.
And now they have a nicer house than we did in our early 20s.
Would we do it again?
…Ask us after we build the aviary.
